What is Midjourney?
Midjourney generates images from text prompts and is widely regarded for the artistic quality and consistency of its output, particularly for stylized, illustrative and concept-art-style images. It's primarily used through Discord and, more recently, its own web interface, where you type a prompt and receive a set of image variations to refine or upscale. Midjourney is subscription-only — there is no free tier — with plans differing mainly in the number of fast-generation hours included per month and commercial usage rights at higher tiers. It does not currently offer a general-purpose public API, which sets it apart from most other tools in this category. Midjourney's prompt syntax has grown into its own small language over successive versions — parameters like aspect ratio, stylization strength, and version selection are appended directly to the text prompt rather than set through a separate settings panel, which gives experienced users fine-grained control but adds a learning curve for newcomers. Features like consistent characters (keeping the same character recognizable across multiple generated images) and image-to-image blending have expanded its use beyond single stand-alone images into more structured creative projects like illustrated sequences or concept boards. Because there's no free tier, trying Midjourney requires committing to at least the base subscription, though the lowest tier is inexpensive relative to freelance illustration or stock imagery costs for many use cases. Commercial usage rights are generally included from the paid tiers upward, but the exact terms (particularly around larger companies or specific industries) are worth checking directly against Midjourney's current terms of service before using generated images in commercial work, since usage terms for AI-generated imagery are still an evolving area.
